Westbourne is one of the most elegant parts of fashionable Bournemouth. Despite the disappearance of many of it's fine Victorian villas, there is still an atmosphere of gracious living.
In the 19th century Westbourne consisted of wild heath land with pine-wooded chines, frequented by smugglers, and used for hiding contraband.
In nearby Seamore Road is a splendid example of a late Victorian arcade; constructed in 1884 by Henry Joy and features 22 gargoyles who leer and grin at the shoppers below.
Robert Louis Stevenson, author of such classics as "A Child's Garden of Verse", "Kidnapped" and of course, "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", once owned a house on Alum Chine Road, (Skerryvore), from 1895 to 1897, named after the Scottish lighthouse built by his father.
The site is now commemorated by an inscribed stone, and a nearby road is named after this famed author.

Westbourne today offers the holidaymaker a wide range of quality shops, restaurants and cafes and is within easy walking distance of the "Blue Flag" Alum Chine Beach.
